Description

  • Mario Nuzzi, called Mario de' Fiori
  • Tancred and Erminia, surrounded by a garland of flowers
  • oil on canvas, unlined
  • 100 by 130 cm.

Condition

Canvas is unlined. Picture is dirty and has probably not been cleaned or restored in decades. Overall the image presents a fresh image with strong details, and many of the flowers retain their impasto. UV light reveals scattered but isolated areas of retouching, primarily concentrated in the four corners, although the flowers and figures appear overwhelmingly devoid of retouching. Painting could respond well to cleaning and would brighten considerably. In a carved giltwood frame.

Catalogue Note

The subject is taken from Torquato Tasso's epic poem Gerusalemme Liberata (cantos 6 and 7) and depicts the Princess Erminia of Antioch discovering the wounded Tancred.  While the garland of flowers is typical of Mario Nuzzi's style, the figures have been traditionally attributed to Andrea Vaccaro.
