Description
- Zanobi Rosi
- The Madonna and Child with Saints Catherine or Mary Magdalene, Roch or John, Michael and two bishop saints
- oil on canvas
Provenance
Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 31 October 1980, lot 10 (as Cecco Bravo).
Condition
The canvas has been recently relined but the paint surface retains a nice impasto in areas and is clean beneath a clear varnish. There are two very fine cosmetic scratches in the varnish beside the head of the bishop saint at right but these do not appear to reach the paint layer. Inspection under UV is impeded by the varnish but reveals very minor retouched losses here and there, particularly at the edges and fine retouching to what appears to be an old surface crack in the drapery of the female figure at right.
The painting requires no further work and is ready to hang in its present state.
Offered in a decoratively carved black and gilt wood frame.
