Description

  • London, a view of Saint Paul's Cathedral from the Thames
  • oil on canvas
  • 24 x 45 inches

Provenance

Anonymous sale, ("The Property of a Corporation'), London, Sotheby's, 15 June 2000, lot 79 (as William James);
There purchased by the present collectors.

Condition

The canvas has been relined and the painting is clean and presentable as is. The paint surface has been generally well retained and there is nice retention of detail in the architecture and foreground. Examination under UV light: the varnish fluoresces unevenly and this may be due to selective cleaning. Retouching can be seen throughout the sky and clouds. A few cosmetic retouches here and there in the architecture and a few in the water and boats. There is a slightly larger area of retouching at lower center in water and prow of sailboat, and another in water at far right. Overall the painting presents a very decorative image and can be hung in its present state. Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame with minor nicks.
