Catalogue Note
In 1614, Bramer set off on a lengthy journey south, travelling first to France and then Italy. Between 1619 and 1625, he lived in Rome, where he worked closely alongside, and was greatly influenced by, Adam Elsheimer. Returning to Holland, Bramer became a member of the Delft guild in 1629, and rapidly established himself as a highly successful artist, gaining commissions for paintings from amongst others the Stadholder and various civic bodies.
He was also a highly prolific draughtsman, and produced various series of drawings, some, like this, in watercolour, others monochrome, illustrating the Bible and other religious and literary texts. The present sheet depicts one of Bramer's favourite biblical subjects, The Circumcision of Christ. It is the most frequently depicted subject in Bramer's painted oeuvre.
