Catalogue Note
This accomplished drawing could be a design for a painted glass panel, or for a painting destined either for the top of an altarpiece, or for a rather specific architectural location. It is most likely South German, or possibly Swiss, and must date from the second half of the 16th century.
The episode illustrated is described in the Gospels of both Saint Mark (4: 37-39) and Saint Matthew (8: 24-25): Christ, travelling with his disciples in a boat on the sea of Galilee, was sleeping in the stern when a terrible storm blew up. The disciples woke him in a panic, whereupon he calmed the storm and saved them all.
