Catalogue Note

The present sheet, a fine example of the artist's mature style, depicts three separate head studies of a mustachioed gentleman, executed in Menzel's characteristic black chalk and stumping.

By this stage in his career Menzel had been drawing prodigiously for the best part of 60 years and this wealth of experience undoubtedly translates into the confidence and fluidity of line that is so apparent in this accomplished sheet of studies.  Likewise, Menzel's virtuoso use of stumping, a technique in which he would rub the chalk to create the effect of a satin-like surface as well as subtle shadowing, is clearly evident in this atmospheric and hyper-realistic portrayal, undoubtedly drawn from life.
