Catalogue Note
At the time of the Roesler collection sale in New York in 1990 (see Provenance) George Knox confirmed that the present sheet is a study, with minor differences, for The Reception of King Henry III at the Villa Contarini alla Mira, formerly part of that villa's frescoed decorations, and now in the Musée Jacquemart–André, Paris (fig. 1). The fresco records a real event from French history when the future King Henri III was received at the Villa Contarini by the then Doge Contarini, on 27 July 1574, as he travelled back from Poland to France to take up the throne, following the death of his brother, King Charles IX. The fresco is datable to 1745-50. At that time the villa was the property of the Pisani family, who were presumably keen to add a little lustre to their home by highlighting its moment of Royal history. In 1893, the fresco, which decorated the main salon of the villa, was detached and taken to Paris. Knox mentions six further drawings related to this same scene.1
