Catalogue Note

Both Gaetano and Mauro Gandolfi produced these attractive compositions of stylish heads which were clearly much in demand from collectors.  It is often difficult to distinguish between the work of the father and the son, as they worked in such a similar style and technique.  However, the faces in the present drawing appear more neoclassical in style, which was more in keeping with Mauro's depictions of heads.  See also lot 131 for a sheet of head studies by Gaetano.
