Possibly from a volume of caricatures in the collection of King Charles III of Spain;
thence by descent in the Spanish Royal Collection until the Battle of Vittoria, 1813;
when seized by Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington,
by descent to the 7th Duke of Wellington;
the volume broken up in 1971

Condition

Laid down on a period mount. Some very minor stains, otherwise in very good condition. Sold in a giltwood frame.

Catalogue Note

This humorous sheet once formed part of a group of about 200 caricatures by Ghezzi which were bound into three albums in 1780;  these albums were broken up in 1971.  Further examples of sheets originating from the same albums are to be found in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston,1 and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.2
