Catalogue Note
‘I suppose few artists really know what they are doing; it is an instinctive, irrational, activity … The abstract painter submits himself entirely to the un-known … his only props his colours, his shapes and their space-creating powers.’
(The Artist, quoted in Lawrence Alloway, Nine Abstract Artists: Their Works and Theory, Alex Tiranti Ltd, London, 1954, pp.29-30)
