Catalogue Note

The highly tactile quality of jade, carvings from which were designed to be admired through sight and touch, is evident in this piece. The patina suggests that it was initially cut into a rough block in preparation for carving, but over time passed through the hands of various collectors to result in its highly organic and unique present form. Confucius noted the eleven virtues of jade: its polish and brilliancy represent purity; its compactness and extreme hardness represent the sureness of intelligence; its angles, although they seem sharp but do not cut, represent justice; the pure and prolonged sound when struck represents music; its colour represents loyalty; its interior flaws, sincerity; its iridescent brightness, heaven; its substance and origins represent the earth. Furthermore, without ornamentation jade symbolised chastity. Thus, the precious material was reserved for, and favoured by, the court and scholarly elite.
