Catalogue Note

Denon was a member of the Commission des Sciences et Arts which accompanied Napoleon's expedition to Egypt and remained there for thirteen months, working continuously to record the Egyptian monuments. He was the first to reveal the richness of Egyptian art to Europe, and helped launch the Egyptian Revival style in art and interior design, resulting in him being appointed director of the new Musée Napoléon (or Louvre) in 1804. Its popularity resulted in it being republished (in smaller format) and translated into several other languages within the space of a few years. The Description de l'Égypte, also based on research carried out during Napoleon's expedition, only began publication in 1809 (see lot 69).
