Catalogue Note
ONE OF THE LANDMARKS IN ARABIC STUDIES. This work, an abridgement of all the oriental books d'Herbelot had ever read, forms a sort of encyclopaedia of Arabic, Turkish, Persian, Aramaic, Syriac and Hebrew. D'Herbelot worked on his dictionary for thirty years only to die two years before its publication. The orientalist Antoine Galland saw to the completion and publication of this first edition of the Bibliothèque orientale in 1697, for which he wrote the preface and added supplementary material.
