Catalogue Note

Greene, gripped by a fear that he might die before completing this novel, wrote a letter his wife Vivien explaining how the story should be completed in the event that he was unable to do so. Although the wartime publication dampened sales, the book is now viewed as amongst Greene's greatest works.
