Catalogue Note

FIRST EDITION IN RUSSIAN of Gorky's influential novel about the conversion of factory workers to the revolutionary cause, written in the wake of the 1905 Revolution. It first appeared in New York earlier in 1907, translated into English. It later became the key novel of socialist realism but had little critical acclaim.
