Catalogue Note

Goethe began work on Faust in the 1770s, and the first publication of a part of it, Ein Fragment, was in 1790. The first complete edition of Faust (later called Part One) was in 1808, and Part Two, which Goethe worked on to the end of his life (he died in 1832), first appeared in print in 1833.

The 1790 edition has two issues, the priority of which has not been established, though it is supposed that the issue with the repeated lines (as here) is more likely to have been the earlier one, with the repetition corrected in the other issue.
