Catalogue Note

A VERY FINE COPY OF THE FIRST ISSUE OF THE FIRST EDITION, WHICH WAS SOLD OUT WITHIN THE FIRST WEEK OF PUBLICATION. Comprising the first two chapters of Darwin's intended "big book" on the origin of species, Murray published The Variation of Animals and Plants in a run of only 1,500 copies, most of which had already been sold at his sale the previous autumn. A second issue was brought out in February, a month after the title had first appeared.
