Catalogue Note

First edition of the Irish author and politician's spy novel about a planned German invasion of England. "A fine thriller which has withstood the test of time, it is also marked by a richness of characterization, a matchless sense of pace, and a superb evocation of land- and seascape" (Oxford DNB). Dismayed by the British reaction and brutal suppression of the 1916 Rising, Childers later became leader of the Sinn Fein resistance to the Irish Free State and was condemned to death by firing squad by an Irish Military Court in November 1916.
