London: Smith, Elder & Co., 1870, FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, four wood-engraved illustrations, 2 pages of publisher's advertisements at end, publisher's brown smooth cloth blocked in black, modern folding box, occasional slight spotting, some wear to joints, spine chipped at head and foot, Reginald Roose Francis, bookplate; ii) The Vicar of Bullhampton. London: Bradbury, Evans & Co., 1870, FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM, 35 wood-engraved plates and vignettes by H. Woods, publisher's brown cloth blocked with double frame in black, gold vignette view of Bullhampton Church on upper cover, hinges cracked, some gatherings loose, binding slightly scuffed, spine chipped at head and foot; iii) Sir Harry Hotspur of Humblethwaite. An unauthorised edition of Brown, Jones and Robinson was published in New York by Harper's in 1862; the first English edition, in Sadleir's words a "secondary first," contains illustrations not present elsewhere.
