Catalogue Note

“In these transitional works, Hélio came close indeed to the end of representation and to the deconstruction of space through color. This insight would constitute the chromatic and deconstructive basis of the Metaesquemas… Years later Hélio recalled how the “METAESQUEMAS emerge from the solitary impregnation of WHAT IS CONCRETE.” That is, these works represent his nonacademic investigation of the principles and issues posed by Concrete art and their transformation into a brand-new proposal on the relationship between color and space that was his own. This process involved the self-conscious assimilation of Mondrian’s concept of structure, which becomes replicated ad infinitum, providing a stable matrix for the dynamic series.”
