Condition

Under ultraviolet light, one can see retouches throughout the composition addressing paint losses that may have occurred when the work was rolled or otherwise removed from its stretcher. The left and right edges show more losses than anywhere else, and there is a band of losses running through the necks of the horses. There are a significant number of retouches. The lining does not correct the noticeably raised cracking. If one was to restore this picture, changing this lining would be vital. This would make it possible to achieve an attractive surface, on which one could apply retouches more carefully and accurately. Despite the numerous retouches, the paint layer shows no real abrasion. The work would respond well to careful restoration. (This condition report has been provided courtesy of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc.)
