Catalogue Note

This drawing was executed in 1915 while Beckmann was serving as a medical corpsman in the German Army near the front in Verwik, Belgium. It is an impressive document showing the development of the artist's changing style as he is experiencing the horrors of war. Theses studies of the wounded and dead would ultimately be used in his monumental composition Auferstehung (Resurrection) in the collection of the Stattsgalerie, Stuttgart.
