Catalogue Note

Following a trip to Lago Maggiore in Italy in 1909, Henri Le Sidaner sought to incorporate Mediterranean features into the grounds of his home in Gerberoy. In the present work, the artist includes the Italian-influenced balustrades that he erected in his garden in a sweeping view of the quiet French village and its rural surroundings. Le Sidaner found continual inspiration in Gerberoy, using the town and his garden as subject matter for almost 40 years: “The effect was overwhelming: in Le Sidaner’s lifetime, the garden in Gerberoy was already among the most beautiful in France and was one of the reasons the town was bestowed the title ‘prettiest village in France’ in 1938” (Ingrid Mössinger & Karin Sagner, Henri Le Sidaner: A Magical Impressionist, Chemnitz, 2009, p. 41).
