Condition

Executed on buff wove paper, not laid down and hinged to the mount in two places along the upper edge. The lower edge is deckled and the other three edges are slightly unevenly cut. There are five pin holes along the extreme left edge and one towards the upper part of the left edge; there is a further pin hole to the upper part of the right edge. The sheet is time stained and there are scattered spots of foxing to the sheet. There are faint flattened creases throughout, not visually distracting, most notable along the upper and left edges. This work is in overall good condition.

Catalogue Note

According to Alice Strobl, Gustav Klimt’s inscription R identifies the present work as part of a group of drawings selected for Carl Reininghaus who purchased from the artist the famous Beethovenfries (today in the Secession Museum, Vienna). The present work is thought to be a preparatory study for the oils Irrlichter and Beethovenfries.
