Etudes pour un crucifix is a prepatory drawing for Matisse's commission to create an overall design scheme for the Chapel of the Rosary of the Dominicans in Vence, today considered a culmination point within the artist's œuvre. Matisse approached the commission from a figurative perspective focusing on the effects of colour, light and movement within space.
Executed on cream wove paper, laid down on Japan paper and taped to the backing board in two places along the left and right edges. The ink is faded and the sheet is slightly time stained. There are two marks to the upper edge, remnants from previous mounting. There is a repaired tear approximately 1.5cm. long to the left part of the upper edge. This work is in overall fairly good condition. "In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above.
