Condition

The canvas is not lined. UV examination reveals three small areas of retouching towards the lower left corner. The canvas is slightly frayed in places along the extreme edge where it meets the stretcher. There is a vertical stretcher bar mark at the centre of the canvas with associated fine lines of craquelure and some scattered fine lines of craquelure predominantly to the thicker areas of impasto. This work is in overall good condition.

Catalogue Note

‘For Loiseau, endowed with intense sensitivity, possesses the delicacy and subtlety of a poet… This ceaseless effort to transform the heaviness of pictorial matter into the lightness of the produced impression, by the alchemy of shades of colours, always remained at the heart of his research, revealing a true knowledge of his profession’

Didier Imbert, Gustave Loiseau, 1895, Paris, p. 5
