Condition

The canvas is not lined. There is an uneven varnish preventing UV light from fully penetrating, however UV examination appears to show no signs of retouching. There is some gentle undulation to the canvas towards the upper left corner. There is a small surface loss towards the lower part of the right edge and some further flecks of pigment loss towards the upper right corner. This work is in overall very good condition.

Catalogue Note

The dog portrayed in the present work was the artist's daughter Julie Manet’s greyhound, which was given to her as a gift by Stéphane Mallarmé. The poet baptised the dog Laërte and wrote a little verse:

Leur levrier industrieux
Aux Dames Manet va remettre
- Côtes du Nord, à portrieux,
La Roche-Plate - cette lettre.
