Catalogue Note

The present work was executed during the artist's trips to the Transkei and Pondoland, during which Stern travelled through rural landscape, engaging with the local people, and working en plein air. She produced a series of magnificent charcoals during these trips in the mid-1930s, among which the present work counts as a particularly fine example, prefiguring the mature works that Stern completed during her journeys to the Congo many years later.
