  • A RARE GOLD PAINTED TURQUOISE SET AUTOMATON 'ORACLE' BOXCIRCA 1825

• the rectangular box chased on the cover with a bouquet of flowers set with turquoise, the sides and base with engine turned reserves and bordered by chased foliage • the bottom opening to reveal a mechanical painted nymph inhabiting a classical garden with an aperture lifting to reveal floral pictorial representations of answers to the questions inserted through the front

Condition

The object is operating at time of cataloguing, however it was not tested for accuracy or duration of the power reserve and may need service at the buyer's discretion. Please note that Sotheby's does not guarantee the future working of the movement. Case in overall good condition with oxidation throughout. Heavier oxidation at the base of the case with chase floral design and turquoise accents. Turquoise piece all present, one with some loss. Question drawer is missing a rectangular door cover. Interior painting is rich with little surface or pigment loss. One small dot of pigment loss at the right side. A question slide is taken form the larger drawer and inserted pin-side up into the smaller drawer. An answer is revealed via a female figure and a flower that appears upon activating the automaton. Movements and hinges are stiff. Automaton functions with all question slides.
