Catalogue Note
Being a boutique brand established in the new millennium (2005), MB&F's fresh approach towards designs of watches is what sets the brand apart in the traditional watchmaking industry. Max Büsser, the founder of MB&F sums up his philosophy for the brand in an interview, stating that "[A timepiece] is a functional tool as well as a work of art ... and a high performance machine. Emotional values would centre mostly around a real creativity unseen to date, a courage or even a boldness in the attitude of the project and finally the personality of the creator;" thus explains the breath-taking futuristic designs of the brand's "horological machines," so the wristwatches of MB&F are named.
The brand's first creation, Horological Machine 1 (HM1) speaks of MB&F's endeavour towards cutting-edge innovations. The striking shape and size of the case design tells of MB&F's forward-looking approach, with the hour and minute dials separated by a flying tourbillon in the centre. In order for the two dials to communicate, a masterly made ultra-flat and mirror-polished wheel centrally located under the dial is used. It floats between two layers of precision-adjusted jewels as it is too thin to be supported from its axis. In addition, HM1 is the first wristwatch to feature a movement with four barrels connected in both parallel and series, and the first one to have two sources transmitting energy to the regulating system simultaneously. These four main barrels greatly improve accuracy, lessen wear and raise durability of HM1 by reducing the torque of each mainspring.
MB&F's HM1 is an avant-garde masterpiece that blends the groundbreaking aesthetics of micro-engineering and architecture with an astonishing level of artisan minutia into the three-dimensional timepiece.
