Condition

The movement is running at time of cataloguing, however it would benefit from a service as it hasn't been used for a long time and it was not tested for the accuracy of time or duration of the power reserve and may need service at the buyer's discretion. Please note that Sotheby's does not guarantee the future working of the movement. The dial is in a fair condition consistent with the age of the watch. The case has been polished as the hallmarks are not very visible. "L.P." is engraved on the back of the case. Very attractive and complete, recommended.

Catalogue Note

This model, Ref. 96, "the" Calatrava, was introduced in the early 1930's and was produced for over 40 years. It is regarded as the most recognizable of Patek Philippe's designs; a classic, vintage watch of understated elegance.

The watch, part of the first series, retains its original Certificate of Origin, invoice and presentation case. Furthermore, it is only the second example of first series with a black dial signed by the retailer Lôrtscher making this piece extremely attractive for a collector looking for a rare original Calatrava piece with its original papers.

To the best of our knowledge, this watch has never been offered at auction before.
