Condition
The plaster is in overall very good condition with a few airbubbles and casting seems visible to the surface, at several places. Some minor wear to the patina consistent with age and handling.

Catalogue Note
Ce plâtre de Géricault s’inscrit dans les recherches préparatoires pour son tableau du Radeau de la Méduse (Salon de 1819). Il a réalisé un nombre important d’études préliminaires - dessins et figurines en cire -, pour cet ambitieux projet, tant pour son thème que pour sa composition. Nous connaissons un deuxième plâtre de la Figure d’homme gisant qui est conservé Wallraf-Richartz-Museum de Cologne (inv. n° SK 303). Des dessins préliminaires par Géricault permettent de rapprocher le sujet ici présent de la figure d'un homme gisant au premier plan du Radeau de la Méduse.
