Condition

Good condition overall with hairline firing fissures visible at several places. Minor wear to the patina consistent with age and handling and a few minor lacks to the patina at several places. A few minor chips to the edges of the base. The two arms of the boy may have been modelled separately. His proper right thumb has been reattached and possibly his proper right small finger. His proper left index may have been reattached. The shell is modelled separately with a pin fitting into a hole on the boy proper right palm.

Catalogue Note

Carpeaux modela le Pêcheur à la Coquille à Rome en 1857, reprenant l'attitude d'un jeune garçon vu à Naples. La composition rappelle également le Jeune pêcheur napolitain jouant avec une tortue et le Jeune pêcheur dansant la tarentelle respectivement par François Rude et Francisque-Joseph Duret, les deux maîtres de Carpeaux.
