Catalogue Note
Professor Mozes (Max) Gans (1917-1987) was a Dutch author, journalist, and antiquaire. He grew up in the "Joodsche Invalide" in Amsterdam, where his father was director. In 1942 Mozes and his wife Jenny Gans-Premsela escaped to Switzerland; his father-in-law was deported to his death.
On his return to Amsterdam after the war, Professor Gans took over his father-in-law's firm of Premsela & Hamburger and became an expert in antique silver, publishing Dutch Silver in 1958. He was very active in Jewish affairs and editor of a Dutch Jewish weekly paper. He built a private collection of Judaica and published in 1971 Memorbook: A Pictorial History of Dutch Jewry from the Middle Ages to 1940.
The maker of these finials, Eliaser Efraim Denekamp, was himself Jewish.
