Condition

Oil on panel. The panel has two horizontal supports extending across the verso. The picture surface is in overall good condition aside from minor surface dirt and a dirty varnish. There is some very minor hairline craquelure visible, especially at the upper left corner. There are a few minor spots of discoloration, potentially old loss, visible at the lower right corner. Some minor losses at the extreme lower left edge. Under UV light, the varnish has been applied unevenly and fluoresces. There is an area of older retouching to the figures proper right temple and head, which is visible to the naked eye. There is a newer area of retouching in the sitters jacket near his proper right elbow.

Catalogue Note

The mark on the reverse of the panel is that of Alois Ebeseder, Vienna. His shop was established in 1879 at Opernring 9 and continues to operate today at Babenbergerstraße 3.
