Catalogue Note

The present work comprises the latter halves of two works by Hayyim Vital. Sha‘ar ha-Kavvanot, one of the eight she‘arim edited by Samuel Vital in his Shemonah She‘arim (ff. 1r-77r [first foliation], 131r-231r [second foliation]) and Sefer ha-Kavvanot, edited by Benjamin ha-Levi and Elisha Guastalla (ff 86r [first foliation]-130r [second foliation]). Both of these works are concerned with the Lurianic mystical intentions for prayers on Sabbaths and holidays. Also included here are several shorter kabbalistic works, including Sha‘ar Pirkei ha-Tzelem (part of Jacob Zemah’s Sefer Kehillat Ya‘akov,) and Kelalot ha-Zivvugim (part of the Lurianic prayer book edited by Zemah.) Importantly, the manuscript contains marginalia by a number of prominent eighteenth century Moroccan kabbalists, among them Jacob Maraji, (e.g., fols. 73b, 114a) and Jacob ibn Zur (1673-1752) (e.g., fol. 90b). Signed by the scribe (f.229v): 12 Sivan 5595 (= June 9, 1835).
