Condition

Overall in good condition. The onyx of the urns is beautifully carved with centaurs. Please contact the department for additional photographs. The interior of the urns is fitted with a socket. The onyx with some surface scratches and a few minor abrasions consistent with age and gentle use. One of the urns with a minor chip to the proper left bottom edge, only visible upon close inspection. The other urn with a restoration to the base, from the front to the back of the proper left bottom, which is not visually distracting. Another restoration to the proper right handle, visible on the catalogue illustration. The wooden bases have been sensitively refinished and present with a few minor surface scratches and minor abrasions consistent with age and gentle use. The decorative frieze at the top of the base divides into two parts for the assembling of the urns on the pedestals, hence the small vertical separation line visible on the catalogue illustration. The wood with a few stable age cracks consistent with the natural aging of the material, some visible on the catalogue illustration and which do not affect the solidity of the pedestals. These urns are a spectacular examples of Robjsohn-Gibbings work for the iconic Casa Encantada commission, epitomizing his design’s inspired dialogue with antiquity. A rare opportunity to acquire important works from Sotheby’s 1981 sale.
