Condition

The present lot is one of only a few known examples of this model with a silvered brass nautilus shade. The worksmanship on the shade is exceptional and quite labor intensive, with hand-chased naturalistic details showing the rippled texture of the shell. The shade with rubbing and losses to the original silvering, as seen in the catalogue illustration, and with some occasional light surface scratches and gentle wear consistent with age and gentle handling. The patinated bronze surfaces present with an exceptionally rich russet brown patina. The bronze with expected surface wear and light surface scratches (most prevalent on the sides of the figure's lower body), rubbing, and with some light surface soiling to the recessed contours of the design consistent with age and gentle use. The base switch, side shade holders, and interior electric socket appear original and undisturbed. Lacking a bushing at the rear cord guide (easily replaceable if desired). A superb example of this rare variant. This lot is accompanied by a letter of authenticity prepared by Paul Crist Studio. Please contact the department for a copy at 212-606-7170.

Catalogue Note

The “Nautilus” table lamp model was produced in two variants: one with a natural nautilus shell and the other with a leaded glass shade in the same form.  In this model, a graceful mermaid sculpted by the American Art Nouveau artist Louis Gudebrod rides the crest of a wave as she carries the shell aloft like a sail, concealing the bulb within.  Due to the complexity of the design, a limited number of this lamp were produced and only over the course of a few years.  Unlike the production examples of this model, the nautilus shade in the present lot was executed in silvered brass, making it extremely rare.  Formed from a single sheet of metal, the shell is masterfully rendered by hand, complete with irregular contour ridges across the surface.  The unusual use of metal and the incredibly naturalistic execution of the present “Nautilus” example demonstrate both Tiffany’s enthusiasm for experimentation and unparalleled artistic ability.

This lot is being sold with a letter of authenticity from Paul Crist.
