Description

  • silk
woven in two registers, the upper register depicting a battle outside a city wall mounted with a cannon, the lower register depicting Zhuge Liang, Guan Yu and other officials clustered in three groups overseeing a fierce battle raging in the valley below amid fantastic rocks, the two registers divided by a band of antique objects and flowers, all bordered by bands of floral sprigs, bats and stylized leaves

Condition

The textile is fragile with several areas throughout where the woven sections have or are separating. This is particularly noticeable to either side of the central flag staff, and the robe of one of the central figures. Repairs have been made to some of the separated sections causing some bunching of the textile. The floral decorated border is detaching along the sides and was secured with clear adhesive tape which has been removed. There is some slight staining to the blue border and loss of color overall from sun exposure.
