bidding is closed

Description

  • LACQUER
comprising a box of circular form, the flat cover carved through the deep layers of cinnabar lacquer with a scene depicting two ladies in a rocky garden setting with pine and bamboo trees, all reserved on various diaper grounds, the interior and base lacquered black; the second of quatrefoil form, the cover carved with a scholar and attendant in a rocky mountainous setting, the sides of the cover carved with floret diaper, the interior lacquered black, the base lacquered red

Provenance

The quatrefoil box: Gerard Hawthorn, London, ca. 2000.

Condition

Larger circular box: The base of the box has been damaged and repaired as it looks as though it had broken away. The interior does match the cover, so it is most likely that it is original. There is some damage and repairs to the inner rim of the box and there has been some re-lacquering of it to the exterior and interior. Smaller quatrefoil box: There is restoration to most of the lower rim of the cover and the underside of the base has been re-lacquered.
