Condition

The one with three glue blocks absent, and several locations of lower inlay missing; the other with chip to proper left front foot.

Catalogue Note

These exceptional tables still retain their original surface and are crafted with the most vibrant satinwood veneers and embellished with the most refined string inlay with turned in corners.  These attributes relate it directly to a remarkable gaming table now permanent loan to the National Gallery of Art by Mrs. George Kaufman (see Robert D. Mussey, Jr., The Furniture Masterworks of John & Thomas Seymour, (Salem, MA: Peabody Essex Museum, 2003), pp. 366-7, no. 116 and J. Michael Flanigan, American Furniture from the Kaufman Collection, (Washington : National Gallery of Art, 1986), pp. 196-7, no. 79).

Weld Family

Hastings Weld was a prominent author and newspaper editor. He authored Corrected Proofs and edited the newspapers Brother Jonathan and The Evening Tattler. He also corresponded with Edgar Allan Poe Poe sent him a letter asking for his autograph and complaining about HHW's criticism of his work in Brother Jonathan. H. Hastings Weld was also the great uncle of the famous American painter John French Sloan, who was also a high school classmate of Albert Barnes and William Glackens. (1909-1978). As an interesting side note, Anna Vernon Butler’s uncle was George Vernon (also used the last name Butler) who died in the sinking of the Lusitania.
