Catalogue Note

Johannes Helder (1842-1913) was a Dutch artist who was active in Rotterdam and Leiden. He was known primarily for interior views, but did a number of trompe l’oeil pictures.

A similar trompe l’oeil painting of a man peering through a green door was sold at Sotheby's New York, Important Americana, January 21-22, 2011, sale 8710, lot 341.
