with a bell in the child's hand that would enable her to attract peoples' attention to her needs.  Inscribed in graphite on paper affixed to reverse: Augustus Fuller, pinxt. / Dec. 14, 1853, / Deaf and Dumb.

Augustus Fuller was a deaf-mute artist born in Deerfield, Massachusetts.  His life and work will be the subject of a forthcoming article by the noted American folk art scholars, Suzanne and Michael Payne.
