Catalogue Note

This exceptional high chest relates can be attributed to the Porter-Belden group of Wethersfield, Connecticut as defined by Thomas P. Kugelman and Alice K. Kugelman in their groundbreaking publication  Connecticut Valley Furniture: Eliphlate Chapin and His Contemporaries, 1750-1800, (Hartford: Connecticut Historical Society Museum, 2005), pp. 53-61. The most recognized examples from this group are the high chest and en suite dressing table in the collection of the Brooklyn Museum of Art. They too are crafted from dense figured mahogany, which was a very uncommon choice for mid-18th century Connecticut cabinetmakers.  The presently offered lot is the only known bonnet-top example from this group.
