Catalogue Note

This ‘Great’ chair's repetitive spherical turnings relate directly to an example in the collection of Historic Deerfield (see Dean A. Fales, Jr., The Furniture of Historic Deerfield, (New York: E.P. Dutton and Company, Inc., 1976),  p. 16-7, no. 6).  The large spherical finials with nipple tops relate directly to other late seventeenth and early eighteenth century seating furniture made in and around New York City.  A slat-back example in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s collection is attributed to New York and has identical finials to those found on the Historic Deerfield example (see Frances Gruber Safford, Volume I: Early Colonial period: the seventeenth-century and William and Mary styles, (New York: Metropolitan Museum of Art distributed by Yale University Press, New Haven, Connecticut, 2007), pp. 43-4, no. 14). At least three other chairs in private collections with nearly identical turnings are known.
