Catalogue Note

The donor is probably Joshua Allen of Medfield, MA who married Sarah Parker on December 18, 1727. They moved to Sturbridge, MA in 1736 and later to Pomfret, CT. There was considerable movement among the Allen family in the Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island regions, and there are records of a John Allen in Gloucester from 1746 to 1774.

This cup is one of a matching pair, with the same engraved inscription; the other is listed in Kane as being in the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art.
