- A FINE GOLD PAIR CASED VERGE WATCH WITH REPOUSSE SCENE1771, NO. 3390

• Movement: gilded full plate, verge escapement, decoratively pierced and engraved balance cock with foliate scrolls inhabited by a bird, regulation indicated by an engraved hand pointing at the numbered regulation plate, diamond endstone, fusee and chain, square baluster pillars, movement signed John Raymond, London, No. 3390
• Dial: white enamel dial, Roman numerals, Arabic outer minute ring, blued steel beetle and poker hands
• Cases: plain gold inner case, winding aperture to rear, with London hallmarks for 1771 and maker's mark IW incuse possibly for either John Watkins or John Wright, outer case with repoussé scene depicting Hades, his wife Persephone, the three-headed hound Cerberus, Orpheus and his lover Eurydice within an asymmetric cartouche surrounded by scrollwork and flowers and foliage against a stippled ground, bezel with scrollwork against a stippled ground

Condition
movement will run when wound at the time of cataloguing. dial and hands in god condition, small hairline cracks 5 & 6 and 8 & 9. Inner case with scuffs and scratches throughout to be expected, minor denting to the band. Outer case bright and lively, repousse and decoration retaining good definition, slight rubbing to the most prominent features.

Catalogue Note
Brain Loomes in his book Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World, 2006 records John Raymond working in Change Alley in 1762-84. The repoussé scene to the present watch is wonderfully detailed and retains excellent definition.
