Description

  • A large enamel bonbonnière, possibly Vienna or German
  • enamel, silver-gilt
  • 8cm., 3 1/8 in diameter
circular, the lid with the raised gilded figures of a music party on a terrace overlooking a garden, within polychrome diaper and shell ornament, the base with a bouquet of summer flowers, speckled dark green counter enamel, the reeded gilt-metal mounts circa 1760

Condition

minor losses to gilt ornament overall, one crack on side by basket of flowers, and a few minute others, some wear to enamel base, otherwise good condition overall.

Catalogue Note

Certain elements of the decoration on this unusual box are reminiscent of the painting of a pair of wall sconces at Schloss Schönbrunn, Vienna, attributed to Christoph von Junger. Another pair are to be found in the Metropolitan Museum, New York, no. 1974-556.173/4.
