the exterior painted with a view of Ellwangen, other towns and countryside, the interior with a stag hunt, wavy gilt-metal mounts
Condition
some crack at rear of base, and minor ones along top edge of lid, otherwise good condition.

Catalogue Note
Johann Andreas Bechdolff (1734-1807) started his career as a painter in the porcelain factory of Ellwangen before becoming famed as a painter on enamel. He is most celebrated for his refined city views, such as on the present lot. For example, see an enamel snuff box made for the Prince Thurn und Taxis depicting the city of Regensburg, sold, Sotheby's, Thurn und Taxi Collection, Regensburg, 12-15 October 1993, lot 1527.
