modelled seated playing the instrument in her lap with a begging bowl balancing on top, her ragged costume brightly painted and picked out in gilding, before a tree stump upon a grassy base,

Provenance

With Galerie Almas, Munich;
acquired from the above in 1986.

Condition

The figure's head and the left arm have been re-stuck with traces of old repair, similar repair is around the base of the tree trunk. The handle of the hurdy-gurdy is lacking and the top of the instrument and small bowl are restored. Tree branches repaired.

Catalogue Note

This unusual figure appears to be unrecorded in the literature. The modelling does have similarities to the figures which were produced by Carl Vogelmann at the Kesterbach factory, as well as figures produced in Strasbourg and Frankenthal.
